Popeye is coming!

Yesterday evening Chris announced that he was off to do the recycling, we have to drive it to the local collection point, not sure how green that makes it. However that is the process where we are. He then stated that he would be rewarding himself with a drink in the bar afterwards and asked if I’d like to come. I’m no fan of doing the recycling, particularly at this time of year with all the wasps, however I was tempted by the offer of a drink afterwards.

We were sitting quietly in the bar when my mobile rang. It was someone wanting to know whether we had a room available. To which the honest answer would have been yes and no, I had vacant rooms but none of them were made up. However I said yes and that I would come and meet her.

On meeting her I explained that I had two rooms that they could have, one with bunk beds or one with a double bed and a private bathroom. She asked if she could see both rooms. On seeing the bigger room she immediately told her partner that that was the room that she wanted. We sent them downstairs to find some coffee whilst we made the bed, cleaned the bathroom and vacuumed the room. By the time we finished we were really tired ourselves and went home to collapse.

This season appears to be turning into a strange one. I don’t think that we are as busy as we were last summer, although some of the time I feel as though I am running around like a headless chicken. July has turned into a relatively busy month. This has been helped because we had a whole house booking for Les Vieilles Charrues the festival earlier in the month. We do seem to be getting more last minute bookings this year than last, last night being a prime example. At the same time Chris thinks I’ve changed 20 beds in the last 10 days. I’m not sure that he’s right, however Monday I did 6, Tuesday and Thursday I did one on each day and today I did 5. I have another 5 to do before Monday evening. So it maybe that he’s not far out. I am getting quicker at it. The organisation of having everything in the pillowcase, speeds up the process of finding things. A friend of mine who used to work in a smart hotel in Cornwall gave me two tips too. Firstly don’t do the duvet covers up, it’s really not necessary. Secondly tuck the duvet in, it makes the room look smarter and helps pull out creases! Every little helps. This summer certainly seems less predictable than the last and I would have expected it to be the other way around. I shall have to see how it goes over the next month.

We find that some of our guests contact us to ask whether we accept dogs, which we do. Over the last three weeks we have had three different canine guests. A couple messaged earlier in the week to ask whether they could bring Popeye. They have said he’s gentle, but not mentioned his size. I hope that unlike last summer when I thought a terrier was arriving only to discover it was a newfoundland, that Popeye isn’t too big. I am now thoroughly aware of the dogs name but I have no clue as to his owners’ names! I will need to check. Popeye is actually arriving on Monday but given that I have all of the other rooms to do then, I thought I’d get ahead and get his room ready whilst I was doing the room for the family who are arriving this evening.

2 bed bunk room

I am now off to Pilates. I don’t think that I need it after all of the bedmaking and cleaning that I’ve done today, but I wouldn’t miss it. It’s much nicer than cleaning! In the meantime I hope you all have a great weekend whatever you are doing.

Until Monday…

  1. Catch up on that drink – only make sure it’s a little more relaxed this time!
I’m not that surprised that it’s still sketchy with bookings! I can’t believe the hoops and stresses James and Took had to go through to get to Thailand Applied for four passports in February- lost. Then request for Thai passports; sent and lost! Then Mya’s passport arrived. Break then James’s passport arrived. Then trip July to London on emergency appt to get passports for Jess and Jaime and breathe.
Then visa applications – tech nightmare – then the photos of passports weren’t good enough – sorted that. THeN PCR tests 72 hrs before with possibility of result when they were on coach to Heathrow! Then Tooks passport (Thai) doesn’t exactly match up with name on PCR test Fortunately they accepted photo evidence that Took was actually Took. Finally got through customs and into Thailand yesterday!
Says he’s NEVER leaving the country again – too stressful! He’s just hoping that Thailand doesn’t go into lockdown now (as threatened) 🙄. Now got to travel from Bangkok to far north west to Tooks family (good job they have a month)
I think for many, the total chaos of passports and travel problems (trains were not running – good job they had booked a coach) is putting people off now – not to mention all of the news about difficulties crossing Channel for your potential clients!
And of course -so many people getting Covid again – Jill has it for the second time 🥲
I said last year this year would be better – perhaps September will be up to scratch! If not there is always 2023 – I know you will crack it!
    Happy weekend. Sending love 🤗
