Last night I went to the Christmas tree meeting. Like all village hall meetings nothing went quite according to plan. It’s funny you can change the country and the language but the behaviour remains the same! I arrived at about 5 minutes before the allotted hour to be told that whilst I was there at the right time, the meeting was unlikely to start on time and this proved to be the case.
It was a meeting mostly of women but there were a few men too. Most of the women arrived carrying bags or boxes of crocheted and knitted squares. There were two purposes to the meeting firstly to count the squares to see how many more were needed and secondly to consider how to put them together. A challenge in itself.
855 squares are needed to create the tree. I felt that this was a huge number and really wondered how it would be achieved. Well I didn’t need to be concerned. The total produced has come to a staggering 1400 squares. With this number of excess squares it may be possible to make a second tree.

Next came the issue of putting them together. The chair pointed out that this was not something that they had done before. There was a certain amount of laughter in the room. A detailed plan has been drawn so it is a case of putting the pieces together. At the moment each one of us has a bag of squares, not just our own but a mixture which we now need to sew into a square and return. I wasn’t able to stay until the end. So I have been given my bag today. I have yet to count them and see how many I’m stitching together. It shouldn’t take too long.
Until tomorrow…
