I think it’s the heat…

I took the dogs out relatively early this morning. Whilst up in the woods a deer ran across in front of me. Whilst I was still thinking wow and where is it going at that speed, Archie followed in hot pursuit. To be fair he was some distance behind it and as soon as I called him, he came back. However by the time we got home he was more than panting.

Just over a year ago in a heatwave in the UK he got heatstroke and very nearly died. It was very frightening, he collapsed and couldn’t walk. His tongue was so far out of his mouth, I didn’t think it was possible. I was struck at the time that the base of their tongue’s is white. You normally wouldn’t see this, but that was how far out it was. We got him to a vet where he was put on a drip. At the check up they admitted how close we had come to losing him. I am now very wary about walking him in heat. Telling Archie not to run around is not a goer, it’s what he does in life. However today, a large bowl of water, and being sprayed with a water sprayer seemed to help. I made sure that he stayed on the tiles which also helped with cooling him. After a while he began to look normal again and had clearly cooled down.

Later today it was my turn. I had to go into our local town about 25 minutes away. Driving there I felt strange. However the shop was relatively cool and so I didn’t feel too bad whilst I was in there. Driving back was worse and it was all I could do to stay awake. I had the air-con on, but it probably needs re-gassing, so whilst it was cooler using that than having the windows open there wasn’t much in it. I kept awake and got home whereupon I drank a large glass of water and announced that I was going for a lie down. Some 3 1/2 hours later I woke up again. Needless to say little has been achieved today.

Apparently it might rain tomorrow. Whilst I don’t think that we need anymore rain, a few days of being cooled would not go amiss. I love the sun but when it is 30 degrees and more then it becomes more challenging. So tomorrow after a good night’s sleep and plenty of water, I hope to achieve more

Until tomorrow…

  1. Hi glad you are both OK now. Yeah having to watch Buddy very carefully he still wants to run. We have brought him a cooling mat and he now likes lying in front of the fan in the lounge we did have to cover him. In wet towels yesterday after he was drooling excessively. Take care xx

    1. Oh my goodness. Black dogs in this heat will really suffer. I do like the quote I’ve seen recently : no dog will die from missing a walk however some dogs will die if they go for a walk in heat.

  2. Doing virtually anything the last few days has been exhausting so I’m not surprised you felt drowsy with the heat. I too felt extremely dizzy on and off today despite drinking what felt like gallons of water and juice. Could literally hear the liquid inside me ! Hahaha
You are right about the coming rain but it also beings cooler weather which will be lovely as a reprieve from this heat fatigue we are all suffering.
Rest well and sweet dreams. Xx

  3. It’s just so stuffy. Finding it difficult to do anything Hopefully we will get storms and the air will be ‘cleaner’
Because our dogs are small we just haven’t walked them but appreciate that’s not possible with all.
Today (Fri 23rd) a nice breeze is cooling it a bit but still humid. Thunder I reckon!
Take good care of yourself 🤗🤗🤗

    1. We’ve had storms today. There were even hail stones half an hour ago. They were predicted. However to be honest the storms weren’t as bad as predicted. I’d like warm dry weather now please, not so extreme!
