The proof of the pudding…

So it is now nearly a week since we took on “Choupi”. As yet he has no new name because we have hardly seen him and we have had no real interaction with him. He hides all day. Later on in the evenings he comes out and tends to come near and cry. He won’t however let us get close to him, on the one hand he seems to want to know about us whilst on the other he continues to hide away. Last night I did manage to take some photographs, so I am posting them here as proof that he exists!

Proof he exists!

Going out for meals isn’t possible at the moment anyway but home cooking is definitely cheaper and it is something that we do every day. Both my husband and I cook and we try to take it in turns to do so. Yesterday I was left with a certain amount of stale buckwheat bread. I try not to let this happen but sometimes it does. Sometimes I remember to freeze some of it for another time or to make breadcrumbs. Yesterday I made bread pudding. Years ago, in another life, my husband and I ran a pub. When we took it over we continued to buy in gateaux as the previous landlords had done, but we were often left with items that we had to throw away. We started to think about whether there were things that we could make and that may also make use of products that we wouldn’t otherwise sell, stale bread as an example. We then started making three desserts, apple crumble, treacle tart and bread pudding. The latter two both making use of stale bread. We discovered that these were really popular and they remained on the menu all of the time that we were there.

So yesterday, having not made it for some time, I made bread pudding. It is a real winter warmer! Given that there only being two of us here I think it will last all week. If you would like the recipe do let me know.

  1. Great to see “Choupi” out and about. Let me know if you’d like any name suggestions. I’d also love to know the bread pudding recipe. I’m usually left having inordinate amounts of toast, seeing as most bread doesn’t last long enough for one.
