Gone in a flash!

So the bank holiday weekend has flown by and now we’re back to our normal week. Although not so normal over here with a lock down and a curfew. So where did the weekend go?

With the lockdown coming into force from 7pm on Saturday for 4 weeks there was a certain amount of running around on Saturday. Unfortunately I had to cancel some gite d’etape bookings.  This was somewhat galling given I will have no income in April. Non-essential shops will be shut for the duration of this period. So one of the things that I felt was very necessary was to stock up on yarn, M. Macron says that it’s non-essential!

Later I met my husband at a supermarket where we got a few bits and pieces but more importantly visited the garden centre next door. We wanted some more compost for some plants that we bought a week ago. The particular store that we were at, also often has reduced price plants and we wanted to buy a couple of raspberry canes. We have been umming and ahhing about a poly tunnel. We’d like one but they are usually very expensive. At the garden centre in amongst some promotions was a small tunnel 3m x 3m in a box that had been reserved but was no longer so. I asked the price and the member of staff said that he could do it for 150€. We felt that that was a very good price so we decided to purchase it. Sunday was mostly dedicated to putting up said tunnel. I can report that it has items in it and there appears evidence that they are already growing.

Despite having time off, I did still do some crochet. I have finished all of the individual parts of the coatigan and have begun the process of putting it together. I use a technique which has invisible seams so this takes a little while. I will remind myself not to use navy blue on the edge where I’m doing that again! Last night I sat with two lamps beside me in order to see what I was doing!

As well as getting on with that I also trialled some brooches. I thought that these would go well at markets, so I have tried a few patterns. At the moment I cannot go to the market, because my items are not essential, so the only possibility of selling anything is online. If you have seen anything recently that you are interested in, please do message me.

Following on from our c(h)at last week, my other half finally agreed to us having a cat. I was due to see one on Saturday however his owners were found! Apparently in the 7 years they had been running the charity this is only the 2nd time that this has happened. So they then told me about another cat and I arranged to see him on Saturday instead. The poor animal was brought from his foster care to a centre where I met him. He spent the entire time shaking like a leaf, poor poppet. I agreed that we would adopt him. It wasn’t possible to do so there and then so he had to go back to his foster family. Today he was brought to us. I would love to share photos of him however he has gone into hiding, which under the circumstances is far from surprising. When I next see him,  I will take photos and share them. He is currently called Choupi though we’re not sure that that name will be staying. Answers on a postcard please.

So on the one hand a quiet Easter weekend, we didn’t see anyone. On the other a busy one getting things done in the garden, planning projects that I will be getting on with in the next few weeks. How was your Easter?

  1. Hi Zenna – sounds like the tunnel was a great bargain. My first ever greenhouse was a poly but over a more traditional shape frame – we even managed a grapevine (roots outside leaves inside)
Given you’re such an entrepreneur- you could experiment with grapes 🍇?
Easter was good thanks. Saw James and his family (as we are just easing lockdown) and had mum over for Sunday lunch. Apart from that just gardening and cooking.
Sending you both love. Hope lockdown doesn’t prove too bad. Knowing you, you will fill up your time productively
Perhaps write that book – Tales from the Shed 🤗🤗🤗

    1. Thank you Sue. I’m glad you had a good Easter. I’m not writing any more books anytime soon. I’m still trying to get my copy of the last one I wrote! I think it was published in 2019, though it might have been 2020, I’ve lost track.

  2. Goodness, you have been busy. Digging up the ground to bury the plastic poly tunnel cover is a real labour but well worth it when the strong winds come. You won’t know yourself with having that and you can grow almost anything you fancy. I used to plant oriental veg in the Autumn and then have fresh greens all Winter. Things like mizuna, mustard greens, pac choi and such.
The crochet is lovely and you’ll have a real stash to sell at the next market you can attend. We had a lovely weekend and you. Egg hunts, walks in the lanes and cooking. With three boys in the house things just roll on regardless. Last night after Dylan had watched Chef Club on FB we decided to cook one of their meals. Well, it was a fuss on, but everyone enjoyed it and we ate it on our laps for a treat and watched the Peanuts movie. It was a lovely end toe weekend. Xx
