Meaning and accomplishment

Sometimes I think using what you know and understand is possibly better than trying something new. This is not a negative sentiment, far from it. However if we are to find meaning, a sense of worth, we need to be able to accomplish things. More of this later.

This morning I had a blood test, all very routine. What was nice, not the blood test obviously, was that the nurse had to ask where I was from. She knew from my accent that I wasn’t French however because I was speaking French she didn’t think I was English. She complimented me on my French which was really nice. I often feel that I am not making progress or learning anything new but actually I must be.

From there it was to the bank. I am currently not friends with my bank. The systems here are different from branch to branch. Ours, which was previously really helpful, seems to have moved into the Jurassic age. In order to transfer money to someone else’s account I have to go into the branch and register the new person’s account before I can do an initial transfer. So that was a task for today. I am cross with them because about a month ago, I had made an appointment to see someone. That appointment was cancelled by the bank, I was told someone would ring me and make a new appointment. Needless to say it hasn’t happened. There are times when I feel that I work for them not the other way around!

I made a start last night on my second project that I will be focusing on at the moment. I have mentioned before that I have been looking at speed knitting, which is also known as continental knitting. Usually I would hold my yarn in my right hand when knitting. With continental knitting the yarn is in your left hand. Once you master it, it certainly means that you can move along a row more quickly. However I have been trying to do it whilst also following a relatively complex pattern. This has led to me ripping it out three or four times. I have decided that whilst I may try and master continental knitting, this is not the pattern to do it on. Instead I would like the sense of accomplishment of finishing the piece. I have restarted using the English method and seem to be getting to grips with the pattern. So for meaning and accomplishment I will on this occasion make use of what I already understand.

Until tomorrow…
