Untangling !

Since engaging in crochet I have discovered that I have patience that I didn’t know I had. I am not sure if it’s actually the case, but it seems to me, that yarn is often not as well wound as it was 20 years ago. As a result the individual balls of yarn often collapse becoming extremely tangled in the process. In order to not lose expensive yarn, it’s necessary to spend time, often hours unraveling tangles and knots before rewinding it again.

Years ago I think I would probably have thrown the yarn away. I do sometimes become annoyed by the state that yarn can get into but I find that I am far more willing to take the time to sort it out. The process can be quite therapeutic.

Today I took a friend to a hospital appointment. They had to be there early and it was probably the earliest that I’ve got up in a long time. When I came back I was feeling really quite tired. I decided to work on disentangling a ball of yarn that I have been working on for a while. It is far from finished but I can see real progress and I found the process really quite soothing. So having rushed around this morning, a couple of hours of yarn winding has been a beneficial exercise. This evening I might get back to some actual crochet.

Until tomorrow…

  1. Lovely colours! I agree – repetitive tasks are soothing.
One of the first things I was taught in a house of avid knitters (of which I was not one) was to wind anything other than the smallest balls of wool into a new πŸ€. It was my job to do this from both skeins and large balls of wool! Apparently the dense round shape, at just the right tension, was perfect to drop in a bee shaped wool cup and keep everything nice and tidy – and didn’t slow down the knitter!
Is it any wonder I never became a competent knitter – was the wool wrapping handmaiden. Sometimes the oldies have it! Those little plastic knitting cups that your wool sat in don’t seem to be around anymore ….. perhaps it was just something my Nan made for use herself πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
Anyway, once I discovered dressmaking there was no stopping me!
Your post reminded me of those fond times I spent in a tiny living room, sat by the fire, washing drying on the huge fire guard, sat cross-legged on the floor, winding wool πŸ€—πŸ€—πŸ€—

    1. Actually yarn bowls do still exist. I have purchased one but it wasn’t any good, there was a slightly rough edge that caught the yarn. I’m sure the knitters would have told you why! Wonderful image of you in that room!
