This morning I forced myself to go to Carhaix. It doesn’t take that long but the journey is boring and I knew I was going to have to go and have a difficult conversation in French. So I wasn’t looking forward to it.
I went to the Orange shop to find out why I am now being charged for calls to the UK when up until very recently I wasn’t. I explained the situation. I was told that changes can only be made with the client’s signature. I explained that I hadn’t signed anything. She agreed that I hadn’t. She said then said something very quickly that I couldn’t follow. I asked her to speak slowly because my French isn’t very good. At that point she said, ‘ I can speak English if you like, I’m English’. I felt really embarrassed! However she said I was doing really well so she’d let me carry on. She came to France as a child hence she speaks as a native. The landline is sorted but roaming has finished, so no joy on that front.
Whilst I was in Carhaix I visited the pet shop. All three dogs were in need of new collars, so that was my next stop. I was concerned about taking all three into the shop at once. I am pleased to say that they behaved and I was able to fit each one with a collar.

This afternoon was knit and natter. Today there were five of us. There were two French women, two British and an American. So it was a good mix and we had a great afternoon. We are certainly growing the group. I am making good progress with the jumper. So hopefully I will be showing it soon.
Until tomorrow…
Well done you! Your French must be brilliant if the assistant didn’t immediately start talking English to you!
Just as an aside: I’m not sure all companies charge mobile roaming rates between the EU and GB following Brexit. I seem to remember hearing somewhere that one if the companies wasn’t changing – maybe worth some research?

We haven’t been able to find a phone company that lets us roam for free Zenna, it’s an issue….finally Spanish sims in a double sim phone is our solution and we switch to these when our free roaming periods run out in Spain. Gives you a different number – a bit of a hassle but…. I hope that Chris of yours knows about this (one of many) brexit hassles. The new requirement in Spain is a proven income of about £30k for a couple wanting to retire here – gone are the days of people moving and living pretty comfortably on a basic U.K. pension here (which was perfectly possible in many areas). Btw I don’t necessarily read your blog every day but I do occasionally binge on them (which is why I’m replying to a May post here). Very enjoyable and lucidly written too, pretty impressive u do it just about every day!

Thank you. The whole phone thing is a bit of a nightmare. 30k is quite a lot to have. I think France is still letting people in with less. It’s about not drawing on their system. We both work and pay taxes which makes a difference. Hope you keep enjoying the blog!
